Is being a champion about competence or character?
Completing a task successfully, in time, better than others and perhaps repeating the same exemplary performance is the mark of a champion. There is skill, ability and talent. This is competence.
Character is about constantly improving yourself, spreading kindness, having strong integrity, building on those soft skills along with the skills needed to get the job done. There are innumerable examples to inspire children and us. Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and of course Sachin Tendulkar. Andy Roddick who refused to accept a point even though the umpire had given in his favor and then we have Maradona in the 1986 World Cup with the ‘Hand of God’ controversy.
Let us aspire to build champions with character and not just competence.
