There is a thin line between strictness and discipline. Discipline is participative, in contrast strictness is imposed and regulated. Further, discipline evolves and self discipline is living life better. Strictness is fear and often leads to unwanted childhood anxiety and depression.
Strictness without explaining the reason and purpose can be confusing for children. Having a conversation around the action that warrants strictness will allow participation from the child and possible buy in.
Goal setting, timeline adhering and timely rewards lead to self discipline and there is no reference to the rod. Being always strict with kids does have a potential of making everyone’s life miserable.
