We often hear – I know where you are coming from, really? Is it that simple to understand from another’s point of view? In most cases it is painfully difficult to do that. Mutual understanding is often a mirage, but when it happens it is magic at its best. Mutuality lays foundation for friendships which last beyond life. It is important to listen, hearing is an automatic process for all of us who are not hearing impaired. When we listen and are mindful during our conversation, we are best placed to understand where the other is coming from.
Inculcating a desire to understand another’s viewpoint is a tough nut to crack. At times, my way or the highway and, I am right approach are very dominant. One approach to teaching power of mutual understanding to our kids is to make sure that we listen attentively to what they are saying. Having understood where they are coming from, we may explain them mutual understanding.
